What is an AFP check?
An AFP (Australian Federal Police) check is a specific type of police check required for roles involving commonwealth security clearances, federal government positions, or working with federal agencies.
Who needs it
AFP checks are typically required for:
- Commonwealth government employees and contractors
- Defence force roles
- Aviation security
- Maritime security
- Roles requiring national security clearances
- Some federal law enforcement positions
The difference from standard police checks
Most people need a standard Australian police check (which covers all states and territories). AFP checks are only required when specifically requested by a federal agency or for clearance purposes.

Coverage and scope
What AFP checks cover
AFP checks are specifically for commonwealth purposes. They cover:
- National criminal history
- Federal offences
- Information relevant to security clearances
Validity
Like standard police checks, AFP checks don't technically expire, but agencies typically require them to be recent (within 3-6 months for most purposes).
Common questions
Do I need an AFP check or a standard police check?
Most employers need a standard Australian police check. AFP checks are only required when specifically requested by a federal agency or for security clearance purposes. If you're not sure, call us.
Can I use an AFP check instead of a standard police check?
Not usually. If an employer asks for a police check, they typically mean a standard Australian police check. Using an AFP check when a standard check was requested may not meet their requirements.
What ID does the applicant need?
Similar to standard police checks. Usually a driver licence or passport, with alternative ID accepted if needed.
